The Review of Biblical Literature recently published my review of Porter and Dyer’s work:
Porter, Stanley E., and Bryan R. Dyer. Origins of New Testament Christology: An Introduction to the Traditions and Titles Applied to Jesus. Grand Rapids: Baker Academic, 2023. Pp. xxvi + 278. Paper. $32.99. ISBN 9780801098710.
Here’s the final paragraph of the review:
I suspect that some quarters of New Testament/biblical studies will ignore this work because its conclusions fall so clearly in favor of historic Christian dogmatics and apologetics. Nevertheless, Origins of New Testament Christology is a well-researched survey and a persuasive case that will benefit intermediate-level students (i.e., those with at least one semester of the biblical languages and ability to decode abbreviated references to ancient sources) and their teachers, whether they use the discrete chapters for topical work or engage with the overall argument about the New Testament’s portrayal of Jesus as God.
